A public affairs commentator and analyst, Mr. Lucky Ehiwuogwu Monye has called for an urgent comprehensive review of Nigeria’ s security architecture.
He said that there was an urgent need for the review to enhance inter- agency collaboration, intelligence sourcing, personnel devotion, and a greater public buy in.
The analyst spoke to newsmen by telephone in response to recent security breaches in the country.
Monye, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of a frontline private security firm, Monaco Ventures Nigeria Limited, said the recent spate of security infractions in the country , especially the mass abductions in Kebbi and Kwara states were an enduring proof that Nigeria’ s current security architecture was in dire need of an urgent review for enhanced efficiency.
He acknowledged that no society was entirely immune to insecurity, especially in the light of advances in Information and Communication Technology (ICT).
However, Monye said the scale of the abductions, the frequency of occurrence, the audacity of the abductors and the often inadequate response of the national security mechanism to the incidence point to the existence of fundamental challenges that require urgent fixing.
According to him, the review should provide potent answers to lingering issues of the quality of training and resources available to security agencies, the level of psychological and other forms of motivation of security men, the frequency and quality of intra and inter agency collaboration among security agencies, the relationship between officers and men of the various agencies, the quality of attention accorded available actionable intelligence, and the ratio of the security men in relation to the population it serves.
Monye said that while Nigeria was clearly under- served in relation to the number of security personnel available to effectively serve the country, recent security breaches point to other fundamental challenges that require urgent attention.
Consequently, he urged the Federal Government to initiate bold potent measures to restore public confidence in the national security architecture.
Monye said that Nigeria had quality personnel at all levels of calling to protect the country and said that the review would provide answers that impair efficiency and point the sure path forward.
