PANDEMONIUM broke out Sunday afternoon at Nkpor Junction, Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State as gunmen invaded the area, shooting sporadically into the air.
The gunmen, numbering about three, stormed Nkpor Junction unnoticed through the Obosi, Nkpor-Umuoji Road and opened fire on some houses away from ‘Summerhill Hospital and close to ‘See Best Supermarket,’ along the area, setting a vehicle ablaze in the attack.
The operation which lasted for over 20 minutes caused huge scare as traders who usually line along the roadsides, shop keepers, motorists and other road users abandoned all their belongings and took to their heels in different directions.
The chaos stretched to streets within the area as people ran helter-skelter at Eziowelle, Uzoegwu and Ughenu Streets in fear.
A tricycle operator, who spoke to National Light, said: “The operation lasted several minutes and the hoodlums were not in any hurry. They took over the whole ‘Junction’ area, chanting war songs and shooting indiscriminately. It was a very scary moment and everybody ran for his life. The gunmen were even beckoning on people to continue with their businesses, shouting that they (gunmen) were not after them (citizens)”.
Eyewitness further said that no life was lost in the attack. Meanwhile, when the state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga was called for confirmation of the incident, he could not pick his call.
