Frank Tietie, a lawyer and Arise analyst, expressed his sorrow upon witnessing the celebratory atmosphere during the swearing-in of the new governor of Ondo State, Lucky Aiyedatiwa.
In an interview on Arise TV, Tietie conveyed his concerns about the inappropriate reactions of people during such transitions of power, emphasizing the impropriety of celebrating another individual’s misfortune.
According to Tietie, the jubilation and exuberance displayed by supporters during the inauguration were disheartening, as he believed that one person’s downfall should not serve as a cause for revelry for others.
In the interview, Tietie articulated his perspective, stating that it is fundamentally wrong for people to engage in gloating or express happiness when others are mourning or facing challenges.
He underscored the importance of maintaining a sense of decorum and respect during political transitions, highlighting that such moments should be approached with empathy and a recognition of the gravity of the situation.
Tietie urged both political figures and their supporters to refrain from actions that could be perceived as abusive or unbecoming, fostering a more dignified and compassionate political culture.
He said, “I felt sad when I saw the new governor being sworn in and we saw cheers and shouts and all sorts of rantings.
“That should not be because this is sad. One person’s misfortune shouldn’t really translate to another person’s fortune. If it is indeed that kind of person shouldn’t appear to be gloating or should be happy about that or even his supporters should be doing that.
“Therefore, so much effort must be made to turn down such kind of behavior that seems to be very abusive and unbecoming of a people of a state that are really mourning at this time”.
