A public affairs commentator, Rotarian. Lucky Ehiwuogwu Monye, has urged the Federal Government (FG) to review its recently published admission policy on higher school admission for prospective Arts students .
The policy removes the compulsory credit pass in Mathematics requirement for applicants seeking admission into Arts disciplines in higher schools.
Announcing the review in a policy statement on Tuesday, the Federal Ministry of Education said it was meant to stream programmes without affecting standards.
Dr. Tunji Alausa, the Minister for Education, had explained that the new policy aimed to expand access.
But reacting to the development, Monye, a security consultant and philanthropist, said that the policy could create a generation of graduates who could struggle with basic issues relating to elementary calculations in their daily lives and in business.
Monye conceded that while not everyone was adept at Mathematics, removing it as a criterion for higher school admission was not in the best interest of the country and its development.
According to him, basic knowledge of Mathematics was required in everyday life and in business , and the new policy, on implementation, could worsen the already evident students’ dread of the subject , and create a generation that lacks sufficient logic that Mathematics inculcates in its learners.
Consequently, he called for the proposed policy in the overall long term interest of the country and its youths.
