The Federal Government (FG) and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) are to resume talks next week over the ongoing strike embarked by the union about three months ago.
This was disclosed by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige, during a meeting between FG and the striking National Association of Academic Technologists (NAATS).
According to a statement by Patience Onuobia, the acting Head , Press and Public Relations, Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, the minister noted the rivalry between the education union as he started that everybody is important in the university system.
He assured that the government is doing its best to tackle all the challenges in the education sector completely as every union is needed for proper functioning.
Any union is free to see me without an appointment. The doctors used the advantage as JOHESU also did. This is why the health sector is quiet. The education unions do not do that.
The issues will be tackled based on the immediacy as there are some that are over and above him to handle, said Ngige.
The minister stated that his job is to prepare agreement after concilation on what have been agreed with the employers, the Ministry of Education as they put timelines and monitor them, to see whether the results will be there.
He manages people in measured steps as a conciliator. He wants to take everything holistically as he demands for their cooperation.
I will continue with ASUU nect week just as I have done with NASU and SSANU and they were happy.
He noted the renegotiation of the 2009 agreement would not be immediate as committee has been set up by the education ministry.
