A 45-year-old man, identified as Okwuchukwu Ezimuo, has been arrested by the Anambra State Police Command for allegedly killing his 65-year-old relative, Joseph Dike, during a dispute over family land.
The tragic incident occurred on the evening of September 22 in Umunocha Village, Awka-Etiti, located in Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra State.
According to preliminary reports, an argument between the two relatives escalated into a physical confrontation, during which the suspect allegedly struck Dike on the chest.
The victim reportedly collapsed and was immediately rushed to the hospital, where he was confirmed dead by a medical doctor on duty.
Police Spokesperson, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the arrest in a statement to the press. He noted that officers from the Nnobi Divisional Headquarters swiftly apprehended the suspect following the incident.
“The Anambra State Police Command has arrested one Okwuchukwu Ezimuo, aged 45, in connection with the death of his 65-year-old relative, Joseph Dike, following a quarrel over a family land matter,” Ikenga stated.
He added that Police operatives visited the crime scene, secured evidence including photographs, and have commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, has condemned the act, urging residents to seek peaceful and lawful means of resolving disputes. He directed that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Awka, for further investigation.
