In a significant development in the lead-up to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has awarded three points and three goals to Nigeria’s national football team, the Super Eagles.
This decision follows the disruption of a qualifying match against Libya, which was initially scheduled to take place in Libya but was canceled due to safety concerns.
According to a report by Daily Post, CAF’s announcement on Saturday bolsters Nigeria’s position at the top of Group D in the AFCON qualifiers, bringing their total to 10 points from four matches.
This places them four points clear of their nearest rivals, Benin, who currently sit in second place. In stark contrast, Libya remains at the bottom of the group with just one point, significantly affecting their chances of qualification.
With this latest update, Nigeria is well-positioned for qualification to the AFCON, which will be hosted in Morocco. The Super Eagles have a crucial match against Benin scheduled for next month in Abidjan, where even a draw would be enough to secure their place in the tournament.
CAF’s ruling also included a $50,000 fine imposed on the Libyan Football Federation, which must be paid within 60 days. This penalty underscores CAF’s commitment to enforcing discipline and ensuring the integrity of the tournament’s processes.
The disrupted match raised serious concerns about safety in Libya, with reports of violent incidents involving gunmen targeting media personnel and security forces. The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) had voiced significant apprehensions regarding the safety of their players and staff, which played a crucial role in the decision to abandon the match.
